Last Thursday's discussion sure had a hot topic! Is Second Life just a game? London, the moderator, kick started the "hostilities" by asking what kind of information we had about SL before we created an account. Some had no information at all, some thought it was a game with levels. What brought most to SL was curiosity, boredom or the need to try something new and different. Most mentioned the important influence of either a mentor or a friendly resident who helped overcome the steep learning curve. Then the group moved on to discussing whether SL was "just a game"! Goals, levels, score, a beginning and an end, all these concepts are part of the definition of game for many. Yet, SL doesn't necessarily have those, so the group did not reach a consensus in considering SL a game. Another interesting topic debated was the fact that some people strongly separate RL and SL. However some discussers were of the opinion that that is extremely difficult because there will always be a part of our "self" present in the way we experience SL. Relationships or SL becoming a source of RL income contribute to residents not considering Second Life a game at all. It was a fun and diverse discussion, but it was time to conclude. Regardless of the way we enjoy SL, or the fact that we consider it a game or not, important is to experience SL's rich range of possibilities and share it with your friends! Join us next Thursday in LnL's Lounge at 2pm SLT for a new topic related to this amazing world we call Second Life!
