"Viewer of choice"!
On 26 May we had another discussion in the Lounge. This week, coinciding with Linden Lab's release of the new Search test beta, our topic was “Viewer of choice”. As I expected, most people were quite dedicated to one viewer or another, and the general consensus was a preference for 1.23-based viewers and Phoenix in particular, which has a lot of extra features not present in other viewers.
We discussed and compared in depth several specific features of both TPVs and the official viewer; multiple attachments and clothing layers, tattoo layers, radar, avatar physics and shadows. For many people, a particular feature (such as a good radar) is an essential component of a viewer and without it, any other viewer would be useless to them. It seems that the only feature in which the official Viewer 2 is ahead of the others is with the multiple items on tattoo layers. A rumour that those on TPVs cannot see multiple layers if someone is wearing them in V2 was soundly myth-busted, at least by those present who were all quite capable of seeing my multiple clothing & tattoo layers.
It's clear though, that at some point in the not-too-distant future, the 1.23-based viewers will be deprecated and unuseable, which will be a sad day for those who are not able or willing to convert.
All in all this was a much more “practical” discussion than some of the others we've had at the Lounge, and I found it all very interesting and helpful. In fact as a direct result of comments made during the discussion, the following day I installed Firestorm, and I've been using it as my viewer of preference ever since.
Next week on 2nd June: “Alts Frenzy!” We'll be discussing the use of alts, both legitimate and more shady, as well as some suspect tools available which purport to be able to detect them. We'll talk about the many reasons people use alts, their advantages and disadvantages. I encourage anyone who would like to do so, to attend as an alt, either anonymous or not. I shall be doing so but I'm sure you'll recognise me; there will be one very distinctive clue.
Hope to see you there (whether we recognise each other or not).

"Relationships in Second Life"!
On Thursday 19 May we had a discussion about relationships in Second Life.
I started off by asking people to share, if they were willing, whether they had relationships in SL, and I'm happy to say that there were several people (including our very own Lizzie and London of course) who were in successful long term relationships. Others stated that they were single and happily so, with no desire or intent to get involved with such a thing. There was a discussion about whether using voice was desirable or necessary in a romantic relationship, and the general consensus was no, and most of the group did not use it. We decided that written words can be just as sexy as spoken ones. It was also pointed out that relationships are not always about romance and sex – there are also other kinds of relationships that may or may not include love as well. It was said that sex was important but not defining or irreplaceable.
One couple present (who had been together a long time in SL) said that they had no desire to meet in RL because they didn't want to spoil the fantasy. Others said that meeting in RL would be an ultimate goal. The first couple then said they were both happily married in RL and this had led to their decision. This then spun off into a discussion about whether it was cheating to have a SL relationship in RL. Many of us felt that if the RL partner was fully aware and comfortable with the SL relationship, then it was not cheating, but it was also understood than may people are not lucky enough to have such open-minded partners.
The question was asked then, “Is it still a SL relationship if it also exists in RL as well?” It was pointed out that SL and RL relationships have different characteristics and there is a definite change when it moves from one to the other. It was said that SL relationships are more intense, more open and more volatile than RL ones and that may contribute to the reason why they tend to burn out faster. It was also said that commitment and willingness to work hard on a relationship were key and lack of these were often a reason for failure of a SL relationship. We also discussed how commitment wasn't just “not cheating” - it was also a commitment to communicate and spend time with each other. Compatibility of RL circumstances (like whether both people can be online at the same time) were important.
When the hour was up we felt that there was still much more to talk about, and many of us stayed later, not least for a demonstration of hug attachments, involving yours truly!
In the end I wonder if SL relationships and RL ones are really that different after all?
Here is the schedule of forthcoming discussions from now up to the end of June:
26 May: Viewer of Choice?
2 June: Alts Frenzy!
9 June: No discussion
16 June: Decline and Fall of the SL Empire
23 June: Subcultures – BDSM and Gor (UPDATE: postponed for next week due to RL)
30 June: Profiles
Hope to see you there!

LnL two years and a few months later!
LnL Square is not your average store. London and I have founded the group first, to keep friends together and only later decided to open a store. It has been a long path filled with amazing experiences. We started with a small store selling Tshirts! Now LnL is made of 8 parcels spread throughout Borgatti and Memussi. The Gothic store, the latest addition, is home to the Gothic Line, which after the Tshirt Collection, the Main Collection and the Kimono Collection, now contributes to LnL's diversity, one of its main characteristics.
New areas have opened in the past few days in the Gothic store. Here we show you only a few. To see it all, we invite you to drop by for a visit! Above you can see the Ballroom. Yes, I know what you are thinking... Ballroom? In a store?! Well, that is what LnL is all about, bringing people together. So, we have several lounge areas, some more public like the Lounge where there is a weekly discussion, others more secluded, like the ones below.
The organ room and the cosy Lenormand room (below)!
The Cathedral is fantastic! It has plenty of room to sit about and it leads out to the garden where you can sit down and enjoy the quietness of LnL.
To facilitate the moving about through the 8 parcels, we have installed a TP System (round big coinlike thingy on the floor!). Just click to sit and scroll left/right to choose your destination, then click "energize" and off you go!
A lot of time has passed since that small store! We have become bigger and we have brought our friends, old and new, together in so many different ways. Come on over and enjoy LnL! You have a lot to discover!

“Second Life - a Window to reality” !
On Thursday 12 May we discussed the topic “Second Life - a Window to reality”.
To begin with we discussed the question of whether it is possible to keep RL and SL completely separate, or if it is inevitable that RL will creep in. It was a general consensus from most of is that it is almost impossible to keep RL out; even if roleplaying, there would be elements of our RL personality found in the SL avatar. We then discussed how important it was, and it was decided that if a relationship was involved then it became more important. The question was asked, whether falling in love in SL also meant that you were in love in RL, and most people felt that the answer was yes.
We then diverted away from relationships (a topic which will return very soon!) and we discussed one member's idea that avatars can be separate characters, like a novelist's characters in a story. In the end we discovered that this was not true for anyone else present.
Someone suggested that the virtual world was “easier” because it is not real, and we talked about that but did not come to a consensus, and then it was asked whether it works the other way round – does our SL show up in RL? People then talked about ways their SL experience has impacted on their real lives, in ways such as increased confidence, healing past hurts and being more appearance-conscious. It was certainly a positive experience for most people.
There was one last suggestion that maybe our real life bodies are avatars for our souls... but that's a whole different topic altogether.
