Discussion last Tuesday at LnL!

Last Tuesday, we met in the new LnL Lounge (check out the cool photo London took! Thank you! The Lounge looks so sooooo beautiful and according to all it is friendlier for camera movements! :)). The topic at hand was "License to be rude?! - behaviour in Second Life!". Second Life is in many ways a showcase of human behaviour. It potentiates creativity, social relations, communication skills. It mirrors our inner realities and it reflects how we react. It also opens the door to... disrespect and vulgarity. Everyone agreed that there are a few social rules most follow in Second Life despite the fact that anonimity opens the door to behaviours most would not have in Real Life. Attitudes of lack of respect and a simple hello as one enters a place seem to be less likely to happen. Some mentioned women would be a target of harassement more easily in SL although others did not agree entirely. The group also talked about newbies in SL being the object of a certain indifference from old-residents, which could also be seen as a lack of social awareness. Banlines discussed too - some defended they were very annoying and rather useless in SL, since no one would steal anything away, while others contended the right to privacy. One of the main problems in SL is the the way people talk to one another. All agreed that speech is extremely important, sometimes the only means of communication in SL as many do not use voice, and that tactleness inevitable drives to the infamous "drama"! To end on a positive note, all defended that patience, good communication and civility from all would certainly make things change! Meet us next Tuesday at 2pm SLT in the new LnL's Lounge for a different topic and a lively discussion with a friendly and awesome group! :)

Yesterday's discussion at LnL!

Yesterday's topic was "Second Life's food chain! - status in SL!". The group met at LnL's Lounge for a lively discussion! In Second Life everyone is apparently equal. There seems to be a common beginning for all. Everyone has a chance to have the same things, the same opportunities. Some agreed yet others stated that the circumstances did influence things a lot changing the opportunities each one had in SL. Then the group talked a bit about SL celebrities, namely DJs, and how temporary that status was. Most agreed that the celebrity status is often connected to ego-trips and the need some have to feel superior to others. Then the owner status was discussed. Arrogance or simply a defense mechanism? Perhaps both, the group argued. We also talked about hunt organisers and the certain notoriety they seem to have been getting lately with people praising them excessively. In this respect, some participants highlighted the difference between excessive praising and acknowledging efforts as something extremely important. It was pointed out as well that notoriety and status in SL often results from and is reinforced by the influence of external social networks such as blogs. The group talked about age as a status factor; most agreed that it is often perceived as relevant not so much as a status factor de per si but as a sign of experience. Finally, status through ownership was discussed. All agreed that owning land is a status factor, yet some disagreed that owning for instance clothes of a certain brand would mean the same. Status, most believed, is something more visible in small niches of SL, or smaller groups, rather than gridwide. As a conclusion, it was suggested that time will tell how important the issue of status in SL will become, and if it will have a strong impact on residents. Hopefully, it will not create gaps between people but contribute positively for everyone to enjoy Second Life! Do join us next time for a new topic, same place, same time - LnL's Lounge, Tusdays at 2pm SLT!

For updated information on the groups' events, we invite you to join the in-world group L&L Square or to IM Lizzie Gudkov or London Junkers for an invite! :)

PS: Cool photo! Thanks London!

LnL has expanded!

LnL is growing! WOOOHOOO!! We have now expanded to the next door parcel! The store was getting a bit crowded and we needed more room, not just for the store but also for the lounge areas and the hunts' environments that we have been creating for some of the hunts! Plus, a few fun surprises we have been thinking of that need a bit more space!

The photos above were taken on the platform that shows the new area we will have from now on! London and I took a trip in the LnL helicopter and it sure was a lot of fun! LOL Drop by for a visit! :)

Discussion tomorrow at LnL's Lounge!

TOPIC: Second Life's food chain! - "status" in SL
Moderator: Lizzie Gudkov
When: Tuesday, 2pm SLT
Where: LnL's Lounge
Discussion: In Second Life everyone is apparently equal. There seems to be a common beginning for all. Everyone has a chance to have the same things, the same opportunities. Everyone can own land or have a store. Yet, as time goes by, we realise that there is a certain hierarchy, there are ranks, there are influent people in SL, even a few SL celebrities. What kind of impact does this have in the way SL is evolving? How does this affect the residents' SL experience?

Drop by to share your opinion on this topic! We are looking forward to seeing you at LnL!

Tuesday's discussion!

Tuesday we gathered at LnL's Lounge for another discussion! It was a fantastic group that created a lively event! For this week we chose the topic "Free entry sign? - The impact of SL in RL!". The connection, or lack of it, between Second Life and Real Life seems to be the source of controversy for many. The group talked about Second Life being strongly intertwined with RL for some and totally separated for others. Not many thought that SL influences their life decisions in RL, but most agreed that SL changed the way they reacted in RL making them more aware of who they are. There's a darker side of SL though, namely stalking, cheating, divorce, lawsuits, etc. in RL, that has its origin in SL in strong misconceptions and a certain emotional fragility and instability. To avoid these situations many defended how important it is to safeguard their identity by not sharing personal information in-world, others thought it is difficult to totally keep our data as privileged information. To conclude, one may say that Second Life and Real Life are two very complex realities that for some are connected and for others are simply two worlds apart. The important thing is to enjoy Second Life and take this experience with us to Real Life in a positive way! Join us next week for a new discussion about a new topic at LnL! We are looking forward to seeing you! :)

Moderator: Lizzie Gudkov
Time: Tuesday, January 12, at 2pm SLT

Discussion: SL and RL are two different things! No way the two are going to get connected! Don't ask me about my RL, I won't tell you! How many times have we heard/read this? But in reality can SL be totally separated from RL? Or is this a total impossibility?

Where: Here!

Discussion yesterday! - Alienation is served!

LnL had a full house once again (thank you to all who attended, you were great!), for yesterday's discussion. The topic chosen was "Second Life - alienation is served!". Being alienation a form of estrangement from reality, the group started by discussing several sides of being in SL as an "irreal" reality and how much of an impact that had on a false sense of accomplishment. Everyone defended that SL was very much a "real" experience thus contributing to a "real" feeling of going through life.
It was asked to the group whether SL could be a sort of "digital self-medication", considering that the image of power, success, happiness most seem to have in SL often does not have a direct correspondence in Real Life (RL). Some agreed that it could be perceived as such, others disagreed and defended that SL was an extension of their RLs. Another issue discussed was the fact that people tend to be more flexible in what their "values" are concerned. There is a certain sense of freedom in SL making people sometimes act in a different way than they would in RL. Finally, the group spent some time talking about alts and how the existance of alts was a part of a certain alienation from one's self. No one seemed to think that alts would contribute to a sense of alienation. On the contrary, those who had alts stated that they use them to test their creations, to be able to work without any interruption and to experiment with the avatar's image. Many stressed the fact that SL instead of being an "alienation path" for them, it actually helped them get to know themselves better.
As a conclusion, everyone agreed that whether Second Life is the source of alienation or a valuable experience that enriches their lives depends on the way people perceive it and act. Alienation is served, true in many ways, but in so many ways involvement is also served!
Join us next time for a new topic! Hope to meet you at LnL's Lounge!

Discussion Tuesday at 2 pmSLT!!

TOPIC: Second Life - alienation is served!
Moderator: Lizzie Gudkov

Discussion: Second Life is said to create an alternative reality. Is this reality creating a false sense of fulfilment and accomplishment? Is it reducing our life to a set of irreal experiences, creating detached people, who more and more choose to live in a dreamlike world? Perhaps we should say: Alienation is served! What do you think? Do you agree, disagree?
